I knew there were rattle snakes in Phoenix AZ but as yet I hadn’t seen one. Today while hiking at Lake Bartlett just west of Carefree we suddenly came across a HUGE diamond back rattle snake sunning itself across the trail. As we are two sensible people we stopped short and took a few steps back. The snake began to move and coiled the top 1/8th of his body so he could get a better look at us. He lay there flicking his tongue tasting the air and feeling the vibrations trying to determine if we were a threat or not. Eventually he got tired of us standing there disturbing his relaxation and slithered up the hill and out of sight giving us safe passage. What a moment! What a memory!

From Indiana, through Kentucky and now into West Virginia. My friend Chad and I have arranged our travels so we can spend an extra day riding together before he heads back to PA and I head on to more adventure. Tonight we are staying at a Ashland KOA. Just parking for the night to sleep before heading up to Spencer for a mountain bike ride at Charles Fork Lake.

Today I begin what promises to be an adventure beyond imagination. For more than 17 years I have been dreaming about the opportunity to say goodbye to everything and travel. The destination and means of travel have gone through many adjustments throughout the years but the dream of travel has remained firmly in my heart and mind.
Today I hit the road. My first stop is Ithaca New York.
